History

History

The Village Swan is a neighbourhood pub in the truest sense of the word.

In 1997 a planning application to turn the Swan Fish Restaurant in the small village of Ivinghoe Aston into a private dwelling was rejected by the local council after a group of residents from the village objected.

As a result a number of the villagers banded together and came up with a plan to buy the restaurant and run it as a pub themselves. Enough interest was created from within the village itself and, with the help of friends and families of the residents, sufficient money was raised to purchase the premises and in November 1997 the aptly renamed The Village Swan pub reopened.

It quickly became, and is still, the focal point of the village. It was one of the first pubs in the country to be saved for its community by its residents and 19 years on it has been running successfully as a friendly neighborhood pub ever since.

There is plenty to do around Ivinghoe Aston.

Not far from the village can be found the beautiful Ashridge Forest with its Bluebell Woods managed by The National Trust, London Zoo at Whipsnade, the historic town of Tring with its famous Natural History Museum and The Grand Union Canal are just some of the places to visit while you are in the area. If you are feeling energetic we have some stunning walks on our own doorstep and in particular The Ridgeway with one of its highest points, Ivinghoe Beacon just up the road.

We are surrounded by Golf Courses: Mentmore, Whipsnade, Three Locks, and the 9 hole course at Ivinghoe to name just a few. Riding Stables: Rocklane Riding Centre within the village itself. Bury Farm and Liscombe Park are nearby. And don’t forget picturesque Dunstable Downs and the London Gliding Club and the Pick Your Own Farm at Grove Farm in Ivinghoe – open during the summer season.

Now that we’ve worn you out enjoying our beautiful countryside there are a number of local B&Bs. For example: Town Farm in Ivinghoe who also offer camping facilities, Ivinghoe Aston Farm within the village itself, and Bellows Mill in Eaton Bray. For those of you who bring your bed with you Laurel Cottage in Ivinghoe Aston is an accredited Caravan Club site.

And where better to end the day but at The Village Swan itself.
